Left to Right: Jason, Dave, Ryan
Story Barns was started in 2012 by David Channin (in red above). Dave describes Story barns mission as “Taking Colorado’s history and creating artwork to accent home decor and pass on our history to a new generation while helping to preserve the earth“. This local business has gained a reputation for creating some of the best custom furniture and home decorations in Colorado. David, Jason, and Ryan (with the support of their two shop dogs Bear & Charlie) form a fantastic team.
I recently had the opportunity to sit down with Dave. We discussed how he got into the business, his passion for woodworking and the process behind the magic. However, one topic stood out among the rest; just how much his team integrates history into the pieces they create. For example, he deconstructed and repurposed an 1851 railcar for a United States veteran (who retired in 1952, making him one of the last passengers to ride in that railcar). Another time, he dismantled a family barn for a pair of grandkids who wanted something to remember their grandparents by. From that old barn, Story Barns made two fantastic tables & walls for the clients to cherish.
Projects like these remind Dave of how much he loves his work. He calls refers to it as I.W.L. or “Impact, Wow, Look”. When a customer receives their projects he loves to see them heavily impacted, visibly wowed, and with a sparkling look in their eye.
They often work with the N.C.C (National Center for Carpentry) to help train halfway house women. Houzze.com named them the 2018 champion of the year. Our own office in downtown Greeley showcases a piece of their handwork, come in and check out Lori’s barn door!
