Each year insurance claims are submitted for damage caused by trees or branches falling on autos or homes.  We had a client whose tree did several thousand dollars worth of damage to a neighbor’s car.  The city inspector came out to take a look at the tree; while inspecting it, he heard a cracking noise.  Without hesitation, he decided to run for his life when another part of this tree broke off and heeled him on his retreat.  What could have been a major catastrophe ended up with one scared inspector, a fall to the ground and grass stained slacks.  Needless to say, after this second incident, our client spent several thousand dollars having this huge tree removed which leads us to the dilemma - what to do with tree stumps.  

One of the best ways to remove stumps is using a large skid steer with pellet forks.  Drilling holes in the stumps and burning them or pouring a concoction that composts them have been methods used in the past. Not sure if many communities allow burning stumps anymore. I believe one the best methods used now is the stump grinder.  The attached link is a nice little guide on stump removal.
